Artist’s Statement:

The work should engage and stimulate the viewers imagination. Each piece starts with either an actual scene or a concept which, once underway on canvas, develops its own voice.

My painting is more about the process of each piece, with color, gesture, shape, balance and line evolving as the voice of that painting starts to be heard.

Many of my paintings are anchored in emotion, which seldom is singular, but usually identifiable. The beauty of abstract work is that imaginary forms are the norm.  Human figures are often present, with their forms reflecting either that emotion or attitude which can be elusive in representational painting. Lastly, the process should be fun!  If a work cannot reflect that fun, it will morph until it does.

Jackie Fuchs was born in Brooklyn, New York.  She began her career as salon owner, colorist and stylist.  In the 90’s she went back to school and earned a BFA in Art Education, Film and Psychology, from UMass, Amherst and went on for a Master’s degree in Education from Smith College.  She has taught Art and TV Production in NYC and has been part of the artist community in Provincetown and the Hamptons for over 30 years. In addition to being a prolific sculptor, Jackie recenlty began to explore paints and collage.  Her work is colorful and whimsical with each piece presenting like a freeze-frame in a movie or book.

Artist Process:

I create the space (or environment if you will) first.  With two architectural classes under my belt, I proceed to paint one and two point perspectives. I then collage the room with mid-century furniture, wall art, and sometimes a pet. It comes together like a puzzle for me. I never premeditate the work.  Before I glue anything down I arrange and create a scene.  The heads are my personal depiction of the Modigliani paintings. Visiting the Barnes Foundation back in November triggered my childhood memories and passion for the long necks.  My work evolves organically.   It is as if I am channeling a story that I don’t remember consciously though I am always cutting magazines in preparation for the next work of art. I feel very close to the people in my collages. The stories are mine, and yet the appeal is universal.

Joel Thurm Biography, March 28, 2019

Born and raised on one of the last remaining farms in Brooklyn, NY, Joel Thurm graduated New York’s Hunter College, majoring in theater and psychology and became the worst substitute teacher in modern times. When unable to follow lesson plans, Thurm instead brought his own art supplies to class and for those days, he immersed his classes in arts projects. Without any prior experience in the field, his first major job after teaching was with the famed Broadway producer, David Merrick as his Casting Director. While there he cast Pearl Bailey’s version of Hello, Dolly!, Burt Bacharach’s Promises, Promises, and Woody Allen’s Play It Again, Sam among others.

After leaving Merrick, he went to Hollywood where he continued to cast for movies and television until he left NBC in 1990, having been Senior VP of Talent and Casting for the previous 10 years. Thurm cast The Rocky Horror Picture Show(1975), Grease(1978), and Airplane! and Altered Statesin 1980. He also cast many of the most popular TV shows of his time including: Taxi,Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Starsky & Hutch, and other well known series and TV movies. His first job as a producer was 1976’s highest viewed TV movie, The Boy in The Plastic Bubble that starred the very young John Travolta. Thurm also produced the TV series Angie and the feature films Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Its My Party which featured Olivia Newton John and Margaret Cho among its stars. Thurm’s hidden passion was always photography. His stage and film history gave him a “Technicolor eye” which he brings to his photography The advent of technology (along with his imagination), has allowed him to create what he terms “Fantastical Realism”. He creates painterly photos in colors of all imaginable hues. His art makes the ordinary extraordinary. Thurm’s photography of the London Tate Galleries, California’s Joshua Tree National Park, and images of Provincetown will be seen at the Ivan Gallery in Los Angeles this fall. Gallery 444 in Provincetown, MA will be showing his work from May 22-29, 2019.

Paul Hastings

Paul Hastings

Week long show 10/3-10. Opening on Friday night 10-5.

All of my work is done “en plein air” and most of it right in P-town. No working from photos-ever.

Boston Artist Paul Hastings grew up in Manchester, NH and received his bachelor’s degree there in Commercial Art from Notre Dame College. Although trained in the graphic arts, after college Paul began to gravitate towards freer forms of expression and later studied drawing and painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

One can easily see the roots of his graphic design training in his calculated compositions and in the use of shape and color as strong graphic elements employed to capture light as it plays on everyday objects, the human figure, or the landscape. He is currently influenced by the work of Fairfield Porter, Janet Fish, and George Nick and is striving to reduce the visual clutter of his subjects without sacrificing their essence.

Paul paints in his studio in West Roxbury and en plein air on the Outer Cape –usually in short four or five hour sessions. He is a member of the United South End Artists Association, and his work has been exhibited in the Roslindale Open Studios show and at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

I am an oil painter working between Provincetown and Los Angeles, drawn to the exceptional light and unique landscapes of these areas. Though I have traveled and lived in many places, an abiding love for the landscape and architecture of the outer cape pervades my spirit and work.

My oil painting practice has grown out of life-long habits of drawing, journaling in watercolor, and mailing painted postcards to family and friends. I view my paintings as open missives, communicating feelings of affection for place, presence, and memory.

My work often juxtaposes organic elements (flowers, fish, branches) with the built environment (fences, trays, buildings). These focuses emerged from life in Provincetown, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis as a cyclist and pedestrian – observing, experiencing, and photographing intersections of the built environment with forces of sunlight, plants, weather, and water. Travels and studies throughout coastal New England, the American Southwest, and Southern California continue to inspire and shape my painting practice. I paint outdoors as well as in a studio.

Lisa Farnsworth

Lisa Farnsworth

I am a landscape painter. I live and paint in Truro, MA.

I first came to the outer Cape when I was three. I moved here in 2016 to paint the landscapes I love. My work focuses largely on marshes and houses. I often use photographs as a starting point, a reference. From there I play with the image. I move things around. I add to or alter elements in the picture. In the end the painting depicts a place that falls in the realm between reality and imagination.

I’m captivated by all the changes that take place in the marshes during the cycle of the tide. The relationships between the water, the light and the land are the inspiration for many of my paintings.

I paint houses as a means of capturing a moment whether it’s loneliness, melancholy, or the quiet before and after a storm. I also use houses as a vehicle for the old souls that one can often sense in quieter moments here in Truro.

I’m a lucky person. I love what I do in the place that I love. My heart is here.
